Sony chiude Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble prima del lancio globale: stop al gioco mobile live service

Sony has decided to discontinue development and support for Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, the free-to-play multiplayer mobile shooter set in the universe of the popular PlayStation series. The title, available only in select markets through an early launch, will be permanently discontinued without ever reaching international distribution.

Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, Sony cancels the project after less than a year

A new project tied to Sony’s live service game strategy is nearing completion. This time, it’s Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, a mobile spin-off of the popular series developed by Insomniac Games.

The game was released in November 2025 through a soft launch, a release mode limited to certain countries that allows developers to evaluate a product’s performance before its worldwide release.

Less than a year after the start of this phase, Sony decided to discontinue the project, abandoning the initially planned global launch.

The decision represents a further setback for the Japanese company’s initiatives in the service-based multiplayer video game sector, a market characterized by particularly intense competition.

An international launch that will never come

Pre-registration for Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble opened in July 2026, accompanied by the release of a trailer and new details on the game’s features.

The initiative suggested that the title was intended to reach a wider audience, through international distribution on smartphones and tablets.

However, plans later changed and Sony chose not to proceed with the worldwide release.

While no details were released on commercial results or the number of users reached during the trial phase, the cancellation suggests that the project did not meet the expectations necessary for continued distribution.

How Ratchet & Clank’s multiplayer shooter worked

Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble was developed by French studio Oh Bibi, in collaboration with PlayStation and Insomniac Games.

The title offered a free-to-play hero shooter experience, designed specifically for mobile devices and built around multiplayer combat, selectable characters, and mechanics typical of live service games.

Twelve heroes and fights between PvP and PvE

The setting revolved around a combat simulator created by Captain Qwark, one of the most recognizable characters in the saga.

The simulator’s narrative goal was to identify and train a new generation of galactic rangers, engaging participants in challenges characterized by the humor and unpredictable situations typical of the Ratchet & Clank universe.

The game system combined two different combat modes:

  • PvP (Player versus Player): competitive battles between players.

  • PvE (Player versus Environment): dynamic elements in which participants faced opponents and situations controlled by the game.

The project included an initial roster of 12 heroes, each with different special abilities, equipment, and fighting styles.

Among the available characters was naturally Ratchet, joined by other historical protagonists of the series and new fighters.

Particular attention was paid to the creation of new Lombaxes, developed through close collaboration with Insomniac Games to maintain stylistic continuity with the original franchise.

Permanently closed: Removal from the App Store and Google Play on November 21st

The final phase of Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble involves a series of steps that will lead to the progressive interruption of the game’s availability.

According to the information provided, the title will receive its last update on November 6, 2026, marking the end of its development and support journey.

Subsequently, on November 21, 2026, Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble will be removed from both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

From that date it will no longer be possible to download the game through the two main digital stores for mobile devices.

The removal represents a decisive step towards the closure of the project, which will never achieve the global distribution envisaged during the previous phases of development.

Another setback for Sony’s live service strategy

The cancellation of Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble is part of Sony’s broader push into the live service game market, products designed to maintain an active user community through updates, additional content, and ongoing multiplayer experiences.

This model generally requires constant player participation and long-term developer support, which are essential for sustaining operating costs and ensuring service continuity.

In the case of Ranger Rumble, the decision to discontinue the project before its worldwide release highlights the difficulties that can arise even when a product is tied to an established brand like Ratchet & Clank.

The closure of the mobile spin-off does not, however, imply the end of the main series, which remains one of the most recognizable franchises in the PlayStation ecosystem.

With its removal from stores scheduled for November 21st, Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble thus concludes its commercial experience without a true international debut, joining the ranks of live service projects that have failed to complete the journey to the global market.
